How to choose a waterproof, windproof and breathable jacket according to the climate type

When we go out for activities such as climbing or hiking, whether you want to resist winter cold winds, rainstorms or mountain blizzards, choosing a good quality, suitable waterproof, windproof and breathable outdoor jacket may determine your comfort and discomfort, even safety and risk. Understanding how climate conditions affect function also has an important impact on our outdoor safety and risks. Below I will introduce you to the key factors for choosing jackets suitable for three harsh climate conditions, including performance indicators, material innovations and design details of outdoor jackets that resist various external harsh climates.

Winter:

In winter, we generally pay more attention to balancing the warmth of the jacket and the breathability of the fabric, and require the jacket to be able to resist the cold wind and biting cold, and effectively wick away sweat.

Waterproof level: At least 20,000 mm if it is for light snow and light rain. When choosing fabrics to cope with extremely cold weather, we generally recommend giving priority to jackets made of GORE-TEX 3L or Polartec Power Shield Pro fabrics (waterproof performance >20,000 mm, breathability >20,000 g/m2/24 hours).

Warmth: In terms of warmth, the fabrics should be both light and comfortable and warm. Generally, Thermore® EcoDown (recycled synthetic thermal insulation material) or HeiQ XReflex are recommended, which can reflect body temperature, reduce energy loss, and provide comfort and warmth.

Design: Choose an adjustable hood, which can adjust the size of the hood according to the local climate. Adding a windproof and rainproof flap and an extended hem design can maximize the prevention of cold air from entering and the body temperature from dropping too quickly. In addition, it is recommended to wear a layer of moisture-wicking inner wear inside to maximize breathability. Keep the body epidermis dry and comfortable.

Summer:

Heavy rain: On rainy days, you should give priority to jackets with excellent waterproof performance and durability. For example, if the waterproof depth exceeds 30,000 mm, you should choose a jacket that can withstand 30,000 mm. When we buy clothes on the shopping platform, we should carefully check the parameters of the jacket's waterproof level given by the merchant. If you don't understand, just ask the customer service.

Seam sealing: If the seams of the clothes are to be waterproof, they must be sealed with fully taped seams to prevent leakage and have structural waterproof performance.

Breathable: Underarm zippers and breathable membranes (for example, GORE-TEX C-KNIT) can reduce condensation. 66°North's Snæfell Shell Jacket is paired with Polartec Power Shield Pro fabric and is equipped with underarm vents to help air circulation. In addition, avoid using cotton linings, which will lock in moisture, causing the interior to be wet and stuffy. It is recommended to choose a smooth knitted lining to reduce friction during exercise.

Snow Mountain:

When we climb snowy mountains in our area, because the climate is relatively cold, the jackets we choose to wear need to be able to withstand wind and snow, and the sudden drop in temperature. It also needs to be wear-resistant to prevent scratches from rocks and branches. The first point we need to focus on when choosing a jacket is durability. Wear-resistant fabrics such as GORE-TEX Pro or Schoeller® can effectively resist ice, snow and rocks. The second point is that it can provide protection in the event of an avalanche. Jackets with RECCO® reflective panels (such as Haglofs Grym Evo) can help rescue teams find the wearer. The third point is easy layering. At this time, I would prefer a slim fit to facilitate matching with mid-layer clothing. A loose cut is used for easy layering. It is also important to note that for multi-day expeditions, we can consider a three-in-one system (such as Mammut Convey Tour HS), which combines a waterproof shell with a removable thermal liner. General considerations for all climates Breathability: Higher MVTR (water vapor transmission rate) values (>15,000g/m²/24h) ensure sweat is discharged.

Sustainability: Eco-friendly choices, such as Bluesign certified fabrics (Haglofs) or plant-based membranes (Polartec Power Shield Pro), are in line with the green trend.

Flexible fit: Articulated sleeves and stretch fabrics, such as Ultimate VII Softshell, enhance range of motion.By combining a waterproof and breathable jacket with specific climate needs, outdoor enthusiasts can stay dry, warm, and flexible in any environment.
