OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is an independent testing and certification system administered by the OEKO-TEX® Association, a network of 18 research and testing institutes across Europe and Japan. It certifies that every component of a textile product — fabric, lining, filling, thread, zippers, buttons, and labels — has been tested for harmful substances and found to be safe for human use.
The standard tests for over 100 substances including:
Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium
Formaldehyde, commonly used in fabric finishing treatments
Allergenic and carcinogenic dyes
Pesticide residues in natural fiber materials
pH value — fabrics that are too acidic or alkaline can cause skin irritation
PFC-based coatings — increasingly restricted under the standard's latest revisions
Certification is product-specific, not company-specific. This means that every component used in your jacket — including the waterproof membrane, insulation filling, and even the elastic in the cuffs — must meet the standard's requirements. A factory that claims OEKO-TEX® compliance should be able to provide test certificates for individual materials, not just a general company-level statement.
Chemical safety certification matters across all apparel categories, but outdoor jackets present specific risks that make OEKO-TEX® compliance particularly important.
Outdoor jackets are worn for hours at a time during high-activity use — skiing, hiking, climbing. Elevated body temperature and perspiration significantly increase the rate at which chemicals in fabric can be absorbed through the skin. A jacket that passes basic safety thresholds under static conditions may still release harmful substances at levels that matter during sustained athletic use.
A technical outdoor jacket involves more chemical processes than almost any other garment category. Waterproof membranes require chemical lamination. DWR coatings are applied to outer shells. Insulation fillings are treated for odor control and water resistance. Each of these processes introduces potential chemical risk if suppliers are not certified and monitored.
The EU's REACH regulation places strict limits on hazardous substances in textile products. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission enforces similar requirements, particularly for products marketed to children. Brands without certified supply chains face customs holds, product recalls, and retailer delistings — all of which are significantly more expensive than sourcing certified materials from the start.
Major outdoor specialty retailers including REI, MEC, Globetrotter, and Decathlon require chemical safety documentation from their suppliers. Taffeta and tricot linings are tested for formaldehyde content, pH levels, and allergenic dye compounds — areas where lower-cost uncertified linings frequently fail.
Zippers, snap fasteners, velcro, and elastic components are sourced from certified suppliers. YKK zippers used across our premium lines carry their own independent chemical safety certification.
Even thread and woven labels are covered under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. We source these components from certified suppliers and can provide documentation on request.
